What is a volume serial number?
A volume serial number is the XXXX-XXXX identifier Windows generates and assigns to a disk volume when it is formatted (each X is a hexadecimal digit, 0 to F). It is separate from the drive's physical hardware serial number. Normally there is no supported way to change it without reformatting the volume; Volume Serial Number Editor changes it directly.
What you can do
Volume Serial Number Editor is a small desktop app: pick a drive, read its current serial, and set a new one. With it you can:
- Change any drive's volume serial number instantly, without reformatting
- Back up the current serial first, so you can restore it later
- Work across NTFS, FAT, FAT32 and exFAT, including removable media, on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows
Download the GUI edition to try it free, or buy a license from the table above.
Optional command-line edition (volsn)
Prefer to automate it? An optional command-line edition, volsn, does the same job from the console, so you can
script it or run it across many machines. Native 32-bit and 64-bit builds are included, covering the same file
systems. Download the command-line edition to try it.

Frequently asked
Which file systems are supported?
NTFS, FAT, FAT32 and exFAT, including removable media.
Does it reformat the drive?
No. It changes the volume serial number directly and leaves your files in place. You can also back up the current serial number first.
